If you’re looking to slow down, soak in nature, and discover charming spots you won’t find in a guidebook, this one’s for you.

Hiking, Horses, and Hidden Places

The sisters planned their route with intention. They stayed in the Lot and Dordogne, two ideal regions for hiking and soaking up authentic village life. Their goal? Get outside, eat well, and connect with the land.

In Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, one of France’s most beautiful villages, they the Chemin de Halage along the Lot River. The views of limestone cliffs, water, and green valleys made it unforgettable.

And for something extra special, they booked a horseback ride at Mas de Peyrelongue, an equestrian farm that offers Ă  la carte rides through the countryside. The hosts speak only French, which added to the immersion. Whether you're fluent or fumbling, it's a wonderful way to blend language learning with physical adventure.

A Night in a Historic Abbey

When planning their hikes, they chose a unique overnight option—Abbaye Sainte-Eulalie d’Espagnac. It’s a centuries-old abbey that now offers accommodations for walkers. You can hike in, sleep there, and enjoy the peaceful setting before heading back out on the trail. It’s one of those local gems you only find if you go slow and listen to recommendations.

Auvergne Countryside Charm

Later in the trip, the sisters stayed at the Château d’Ygrande in the Auvergne. This elegant countryside property has its own restaurant and is surrounded by nature. It’s ideal for travelers who want a restful stay with a bit of sophistication. The food, the views, and the calm atmosphere make it a perfect stop between more active days.

Classical Music in Paris

After all the hiking, riding, and rural exploring, they wrapped things up in Paris. But instead of rushing to all the big sights, they chose meaningful experiences. A highlight? A classical concert at Sainte-Chapelle, surrounded by its famous stained glass. That moment of calm and beauty brought the whole trip full circle.

They also spent time in smaller museums, wandered the city, and indulged in thoughtful shopping—no rushing, just soaking in the moment.

Practical Tips

Here’s what they learned:

  • Rent a car to explore the French countryside at your own pace.
  • If you love hiking, build in an overnight stay like the one at Sainte-Eulalie.
  • Add horseback riding to your trip—it’s a memorable and fun way to experience the land.
  • Look for places like Mas de Peyrelongue and Château d’Ygrande for authentic stays.
  • Don’t skip Paris—but slow it down. A concert or a stroll can be more meaningful than a checklist.
