A Summer Trip Timed with the Paris Olympics
Scott worked as a producer for the Olympic Games in Paris, handling BMX and skateboarding at Place de la Concorde. He loved the energy and organization of the games. Linda joined him after the work wrapped up, and they began a carefully planned—but flexible—trip across central and eastern France. Their route: Paris → Dijon → Beaune → Annecy → Lyon → back to Paris.
This episode gives you a taste of traveling through France by train, ideal for visitors who prefer scenic comfort over driving.
Dijon and Beaune: Bikes, Wine, and Olympic Basketball
The Rogers stayed in the heart of Dijon, near cathedral spires and cobbled streets. They describe the town as looking “like a Shakespearean play.” Their timing was perfect: they got to watch the Olympic gold medal basketball game on a big screen in a local park, surrounded by excited French fans.
From Dijon, they took the train to Beaune for a small-group cycling and wine tour in Burgundy. They rented electric bikes and rode through vineyards with a charming French guide. Linda called Beaune “magical,” and says walking through the village made her feel like she was in a dream.
Annecy: French Charm by the Lake
Next up was Annecy, one of the most photographed towns in France. Linda booked an Airbnb loft right over the canal. It was hot—there was a heatwave during their stay—but the charm made up for it. They describe bolting through a narrow alley to get to their apartment, dodging the kitchen exhaust of two restaurants, and then arriving at a perfect perch overlooking the action below.
From their little balcony, they watched storms roll in, saw sunsets, and enjoyed the buzz of the old town. They especially loved ice cream culture in Annecy—every fourth storefront seemed to sell it! They also rented bikes to ride around Lake Annecy, which Scott described as breathtaking.
Lyon: Food, Festivals, and a Michelin Hidden Gem
From Annecy, they took a bus to Lyon, France’s food capital. Even with a public holiday shutting down some shops, they enjoyed walking around the Presqu’île and eating at Cercle Rouge, a Michelin-recommended restaurant that Scott said offered their “best meal in France.”
They stayed near one of Lyon’s rivers (there are two!) and explored both the Basilica of Fourvière and the Vieux Lyon district. Evenings were full of life and laughter. The food scene did not disappoint.
Back to Paris: Cemeteries, Art, and Neighborhood Vibes
Their final stop was Paris, where they stayed in the Latin Quarter. Linda explored the Montmartre Cemetery solo on her first day—an oasis of peace tucked beneath busy city streets. Together, they visited the Orangerie Museum and soaked in the energy of a Paris summer evening.
Tips for Traveling Through France
- Use the train: They booked high-speed and local trains between destinations. Only one leg (Annecy to Lyon) was by bus.
- Stay central: Lodgings were always in walkable areas, close to restaurants and sights.
- Be flexible: Weather, holidays, and surprise opportunities added spontaneity to their travels.
- Eat smart: You don’t need a Michelin star for amazing food, but plan ahead for popular spots.
