Why Combine Trains, Cars, and Buses?
Stephen and his wife wanted to see small towns, visit markets, and explore regions like Provence, Dordogne, and the Loire Valley. Public transportation got them between major cities. Local car rentals helped them reach places off the beaten path. This mix gave them flexibility while keeping things manageable.
They flew into CDG and took a OuiGo high-speed train straight to Avignon. Stephen explains why booking seats in advance—especially on discount trains—is smart. He shares why giving yourself at least 3 hours between landing and boarding your first train helps avoid stress.
Navigating France by Train: What You Need to Know
Stephen used OuiGo, INOUI, and OuiGo Classique trains during the trip. He compares the different experiences, from basic budget rides to first-class splurges. They also used regional trains for day trips to places like Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and Amboise.
Navigating France by train isn't just about saving money—it's about timing and comfort. Stephen recommends booking early for holidays like May 1st (Labor Day) and May 8th (Victory in Europe Day). On these weekends, even regional trains can sell out. If you're going to Chenonceau, for example, don’t assume you can buy your train ticket the day before.
When a Rental Car Makes Sense
Trains are great, but they don’t reach every charming village. In Avignon and later in Brive-la-Gaillarde, Stephen rented cars to explore Les Plus Beaux Villages de France in Luberon and Dordogne. He offers smart tips on getting the best deal: reserve early, check prices again later, and rebook if rates drop.
He also talks about choosing the right pickup location. Big cities like Toulouse and Bordeaux offer more car rental options, but don’t overlook smaller hubs like Cahors or Brive. Just know that smaller towns may have different pickup procedures and limited staff.
Tips for Exploring Small Villages and Markets
Stephen planned his GPS routes to parking lots, not village centers. This trick saved him from ending up on narrow medieval streets. He used a parking app (PayByPhone) instead of paying with coins or cards at the meter. It worked in multiple towns and let him extend time without going back to the car.
In Sarlat-la-Canéda, he timed his visit to coincide with the Saturday market. They visited Rocamadour, Domme, La Roque-Gageac, and Château de Beynac—all beautiful, easy day trips when you have a car.
Loire Valley by Train: It Can Be Done
Stephen wrapped up his trip in the Loire Valley, using Tours as a base. From there, he visited Clos Lucé, Langeais, and Chenonceau by train. Just be aware that service can be limited, and special weekends may affect availability. One day, they even had to walk 5 miles after getting off at the wrong station!
Still, navigating France by train allowed them to relax and enjoy the scenery—especially when the weather cooperated.
Why This Trip Worked So Well
Stephen and his wife cooked many meals in their Airbnbs. They visited small towns at a relaxed pace. They didn’t over-schedule. And they found French people warm and welcoming. Even with basic French, they got along fine.
If you're thinking about navigating France by train, this episode is a great place to start. You’ll learn how to mix public transit with car rentals, where to base yourself, and what to expect when traveling through rural France.
