Mother-Daughter Trip to Lyon and Provence

Sandy and Melissa have a tradition of traveling together every few years, and in November 2023, they decided to explore more of France, including Lyon, Provence, and a brief visit to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Whether it’s about getting around or what to eat, they share their insights into making the most of the trip.

Why Lyon?

Lyon, often referred to as the gastronomic capital of France, was a highlight of their trip. The Fabrys took part in a food tour that also included street art—a perfect mix of culture and cuisine. Sandy admitted she wasn’t initially a fan of the street art aspect but ended up enjoying it thoroughly. Lyon’s food scene is not limited to fancy restaurants; they tasted everything from French tacos (yes, that’s a thing!) to empanadas. They even explored Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a food market named after the legendary chef, although it was quieter in the afternoon when they went.

Lyon’s Michelin-Starred Delights

Of course, no trip to Lyon is complete without dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The Fabrys picked Les Terrasses, which had both stunning views of the city from the Basilica and an incredible menu. For food lovers and home chefs, Melissa and Sandy both appreciated how the dishes featured ingredients and techniques they wouldn’t try at home.

Provence and Its Markets

Moving on to Provence, they explored L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on market day, picking up local specialties like tapenade and honey. They loved the small-town charm and how relaxing it was to stroll through these villages, buying treats for a picnic later.

They also visited Avignon and were impressed by the grandeur of the Papal Palace, made more exciting by a temporary modern art exhibit. Melissa shared how the combination of historical and modern art made their visit memorable.

Arles vs. Nîmes: A Comparison

The mother-daughter duo also visited both Arles and Nîmes on the same day, and while Melissa found Nîmes to be “sparkly and polished,” Arles had a more intimate, small-town feel. This part of the trip wasn't without its challenges, as they faced a **train snafu** that delayed their travel and cut into their time in Arles.

Unique Experiences

One of the unexpected joys of their trip was driving through Provence in a rented electric car. Melissa and Sandy both drive electric vehicles at home, so they felt comfortable navigating the charging stations, but they shared tips for others considering this eco-friendly option.

They also enjoyed a fantastic light and sound show at Les Carrières de Lumière in Les Baux-de-Provence, which left a lasting impression on both. This immersive art experience is something the Fabrys highly recommend for anyone visiting the area.

Mother-Daughter Bonding

One of the key takeaways from this episode is how traveling together strengthened their bond. Sandy and Melissa mentioned that while they often travel with their respective spouses, these mother-daughter trips offer unique experiences that they both cherish. They recommend creating itineraries where both people pick their top spots to visit. They also advise finding accommodations that provide some private space for each person, which helps make the trip even more enjoyable.

Whether you're looking to travel with family or planning your next adventure, Sandy and Melissa’s trip offers plenty of inspiration. Listen to this episode of Join Us in France to hear all about their adventures, and don’t forget to share your own travel stories!
