Who is Andrew Prior?
Andrew Prior first gained recognition on MasterChef Australia, where he showcased his love for food. But his passion for French cuisine took him beyond TV. After living in Paris for four years, he moved to the French countryside, where he now runs cooking classes and shares his culinary discoveries on his podcast, Fabulously Delicious: The French Food Podcast.
Andrew and his husband had always dreamed of splitting their time between Paris and a rural home in France, a country known for its rich food culture, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant history. His journey from Australia to France wasn’t just about food—it was about embracing a new way of life.
Why France?
Andrew fell in love with French food and culture during a year-long stay in Paris while his husband was pursuing a PhD. This experience changed his career path. Instead of returning to a traditional office job, he followed his culinary dreams. Moving permanently to France allowed him to immerse himself in the country’s gastronomy, markets, and traditions.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Adjusting to life in the French countryside had its challenges, from navigating the French language to understanding local customs. However, the slower pace of life and access to incredible ingredients made it all worthwhile.
Life in the French Countryside
Andrew now lives in Montmorillon, a small town in the Vienne department, known for its macaron museum and rich culinary heritage. He describes life there as peaceful but full of opportunities to explore French food culture.
From visiting local farmers' markets to experimenting with classic French recipes, Andrew has embraced rural French life. He also shares insights into regional specialties, like farci poitevin (a stuffed cabbage dish) and goat cheese from Poitou-Charentes, a region famous for its dairy products.
The MasterChef Experience
Annie and Andrew also discuss his time on MasterChef Australia. The show was a turning point, helping him transition into a full-time food career. He shares behind-the-scenes stories, including the intense competition and the physical challenges he faced.
His passion for French food started before MasterChef, but the show gave him the confidence to pursue it professionally. Today, he teaches others how to cook French dishes, helping travelers and expats understand the techniques behind French cuisine.
Tips for Food Lovers Visiting France
Andrew’s biggest advice for visitors? Eat like a local.
He encourages travelers to:
- Explore Parisian bakeries like Poilâne
- Visit farmers' markets for the freshest produce
- Try regional dishes beyond the typical croissant and baguette
- Embrace the seasonality of French food
Andrew also recommends experiencing French picnics, grabbing a baguette, some cheese, and wine, and enjoying a meal in a park or along the Seine.
