July and August in France: Les Grandes Vacances, Episode 32

Category: French Culture

This episode features our frequent and very popular guest Elyse Rivin. If you enjoy her episodes, please consider supporting her on Patreon.

This week on Join Us in France we welcome Elyse back and talk about the many things that happen in France as soon as school vacations roll around. Every year it's the same: most French people go into vacation mode and many things change all around the country. Does that change anything for visitors?

Yes, it certainly does! To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, let us say that an ounce of vacation planning is worth a pound of cure. We touch on summer traffic jams, how French people return to family homes, the difficulties of finding a restaurant open on a Sunday night, and the general ambiance in various regions along French coasts, and much more. Enjoy the show!

Let's Review

Depending on where you go in July and August in France, you will either find the area extremely busy or deserted of all locals. The suburbs will empty out and beach areas / vacation areas will fill up. By listening to this episode you will be able to predict what is most likely to happen in the area of France you want to visit, but keep in mind that large cities will all put on major road renovations (traffic jams!) and some service providers will be away on their own vacations. Be patient and remember, you're on vacation too!
