Colmar and Alsace Trip Report with Katie and Nathan

On today's episode we follow Katie and Nathan on their visit to their visit to Colmar and Alsace with excursions to Riquevihr, Hunawihr, and the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg.

They chose to visit these smaller towns in Alsace so they could get a feel for life in the area. But in order to do this sort of itinerary you need to have a car, getting around on regional buses is probably possible, but would add a lot of constraint to your time in Alsace.

This is the first part of a 3-part series of episodes with Katie and Nathan:

  1. Ep. 120 is on Colmar and Alsace.
  2. Ep. 121 next week is going to be on Chamonix, Annecy, and the Alps.
  3. Ep.  122 the week after that is going to be on Verdon Gorge, Provence, and Carcassonne.

Let's Review

Visiting Colmar and Alsace was very fun for Katie and Nathan, but would it be a good place to visit with children?

The type of visits Katie and Nathan did in Colmar and Alsace would not be ideal for children. They were perfect for adults, so much so that they didn't want to leave. But visiting scenic villages is usually not something you can do too much of with kids. For children,  break it up with visits to the swimming pool or other activities with a local equestrian club. Maybe the toy museum in Colmar?

  1. Dear Annie,
We’re an American/British family living in Paris with 8-year old twins. We love your podcast and were listening to this episode in the car during our road trip to Alsace. We had a good laugh when we heard that Katie and Nathan thought Alsace would not be good for children. The boys wanted me to tell you that Alsace was a lot of fun. They enjoyed going to the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, going for walks in the beautiful vineyards and even helping out with the grape harvest! We did stay in a hotel with a nice swimming pool and let them eat lots of yummy biscuits!! Hope this helps.

    1. That’s a great comment, thank you Josephine! And thank you twins for speaking up for Alsace! The grape harvest sounds like a lot of fun indeed. Thanks for the kind words about the podcast too, it’s fun for me to imagine that you’re driving around listening to the show 🙂
